About

Cantour, a magnificent white stallion foaled in 1995 in Holstein, Germany, is regarded by many expert German breeders as the "next generation" of Holsteiner jumping talent. The breeding that produced Cantour was arranged by the legendary Maas Hell himself; Cantour, as a young colt, lived at Stall Maas Hell in Germany before his importation to America at age two. Sadly, upon his arrival in America Cantour was pushed too fast into the top end of showjumping, with insufficient attention to foundational development. Despite his immense talent, he was soon badly injured and at age 4 he was pronounced "unfit to jump," and his career was declared over.

When he came to the care of Exitpoint Farm in 2000, Cantour had been standing in a stall for nearly two years with no turnout. Unhappy, emaciated, and badly lame, he was truly a challenge for us in the early months. However, we always saw the special spark in this gentle stallion's eye and we knew that given time and proper care, he could truly come into his own. Slowly, his injuries recovered as we began tentatively to ride him in 2001. By the summer of 2003, we felt him ready to begin his training in earnest, and in June of 2003 his showjumping training began. Already nine years old, there was little luxury of going "slow and easy" with Cantour; his progression to the top of the sport had only a finite time period, and his fully-recovered spirit was ready for the challenge. By August of 2003 - only sixty days after his jumping training began - he was competing at Thunderbird Showpark with success.

A truly gifted jumper, Cantour combines a longer body with a flowing, easy, mesmerizing jump that must be seen to be believed. As elastic as he is enthusiastic about his jumping, Cantour can extend and contract his jumping at a moment's notice. Careful beyond measure, Cantour is truly "born and bred" for the sport of showjumping. In his schooling at home, Cantour easily and all but effortlessly works courses. He is, in all respects, a jumping phenomenon. His personality, too, is exceptional. With a generous heart, a curious spirit, and a boundless love for life, Cantour is like a spark of brilliance wherever he goes. Cantour himself is intense, dedicated, focused, and driven to succeed. . . attributes we have seen him already pass on to his foals.

Cantour's father is the legendary and world-renowned showjumping stallion Cantus. Bred and managed by Maas Hell, Cantus was generations ahead of his competition when, in the late 1980s, he took the showjumping world by storm. Wins in Europe's toughest competitions came fast and easy, and the world awaited his continued dominance in the sport. Sadly, this magnificent stallion was lost to us before he turned 15 years old. Already by then, however, he had sired a small but amazing handful of jumping masters. Among those select group of Cantus sons and daughters were Olympic individual silver medallist Calvaro, ridden by Switzerland's Willi Melliger. Cantus' premature death left in its wake only a small handful of stallion sons, and today the Cantus sons are a rare treasure in demand throughout the world.

In Germany, the Cantus son Cascavelle is himself already an exceptional producer, with last year's champion stallion of the Holsteiner breed being a Cascavelle son. No less than ten Cantus stallions have themselves competed at the highest levels of International showjumping - a record that, based on the small number of breedings done by Cantus - is perhaps unmatched anywhere in jumping breeding, by any other stallion. The stallion Come On - successful throughout Europe in International jumping, shares a nearly-identical pedigree with our Cantour.

Today, Cantour is one of less than ten Cantus stallions available for breeding anywhere in the world. Cantour's Stamm - or mare - line, is 1453 a strong and well-regarded mareline in Germany. Coupled with his damsire, the Landgraf I son Lacapo, Cantour's pedigree is at the pinnacle of any Cantus son alive today. Lacapo is also the sire of the dressage stallion Flemmingh, ranked recently as one of the top ten dressage producers in Europe today. Truly, Cantour's pedigree is as robust as it is impressive. As the only Cantus son available for breeding in North America, he represents an opportunity for breeders here to tap into the absolute top-end of Holsteiner jumping blood. Cantour's pedigree and already his success in sport despite injury are truly unique. As he continues forward with his progression in sport, we expect his prominence as a stallion to increase exponentially. Mares bred to him now are well positioned to benefit from this exposure and justified excitement. Perhaps no other stallion in North America today can boast a pedigree as perfectly suited for the future demands of showjumping sport as Exitpoint's Cantour.
